Helping our children cope with their emotions in uncertain times

4/5/2020

As we receive word that our quarantine will continue for at least the next 30 days,     we are all experiencing a certain level of stress or anxiety.  As we discussed last week, it is crucial to give ourselves some grace around getting it all done, as far as work, teaching our children at home, and maintaining some sense of normalcy in a very different situation.

It is important to make sure we are offering that same grace to our children.  Although being at home with our children 24/7 may be stressful, we do have to understand that our children are feeling the same sense of fear, stress, and anxiety that we are feeling.  It is very important, especially right now,  to be more aware of the signs our children may be showing us.

SIGNS TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR CHILDREN:
  • REGRESSION IN BEHAVIORS
  • OVERLY EMOTIONAL
  • IRRITABILITY
  • COMPLAININING OF ACHES OR PAINS
  • AVOIDING ACTIVITIES
IDEAS TO HELP YOUR CHILDREN TO COPE:
  • Talk to your children about what they may be feeling.
  • Reassure them that you, and the adults in our community, are doing everything we can to keep them safe.
  • Limit their access to the news and reports about what is happening regarding Covid 19.
  • Model for them healthy behaviors such as taking frequent breaks, exercising or getting outside to play or go for walks, eating healthy meals, getting a good night sleep.
  • Talk with them
  • Play with them
  • Help them to connect with family members, even if it is through FaceTime or zoom.
As we keep saying, these are unprecedented times.  Our mental health is being challenged every day.  Now is the time to be gentle with each other, take care of each other, and show our children how important it is to come together and support each other through difficult times.  We will make it through this.  Let’s be sure we do it TOGETHER!

***If you have serious concerns about your Childs mental health, please reach out to your family doctor for help.****

Here is a great article from the CDC entitled “Stress and Coping” specific to Covid 19!
